Virginia Dare (1587-?) was the first child born in the Americas to English parents in the short-lived Roanoke Colony in what is now North Carolina. What became of Virginia and the other colonists remains a mystery. In Hawes' 1930 novel, Virginia is involved in a romantic triangle with John Smith and Pocahontas.
