Details: From School Library Journal Grade 1-3-When Rosa goes to the beach with Aunt Belle, she's embarrassed by the woman's flamboyance and her tendency to butt in on other people's business. Belle tells perfect strangers to stop littering and to use a strong sunscreen, and she even gives the lifeguard an unwelcome tip on how to teach his swimming class. The girl's mortification is tempered when her aunt helps a lost boy, and Rosa herself is inspired to help him find his mother. As the story ends, readers are left with the impression that Belle will never change, but that Rosa is beginning to see how the same trait can bring both unpleasant and positive results. The woman's brash pushiness is truly offensive, and the text is merely a litany of her orders or antics. The realistic watercolors show a plump woman in sunglasses, hoop earings, and floppy hat, and a multicultural cast of characters as onlookers.
